History
Hasanuddin University Library was initially established as a faculty library under the auspices of the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences — the former opened on July 3, 1947, and the latter on October 4, 1953. These two faculties were branches of the University of Indonesia. When the Faculty of Medicine in Makassar was established on January 28, 1956, the three faculties eventually became the foundation for what would later become Hasanuddin University.
The issuance of Government Regulation No. 23 of 1956 on September 10, 1956, marked a historic milestone in the establishment of Hasanuddin University and brought significant changes to the management status of the library, which had previously been managed by individual faculties. Following this development, the library came under the direct management of Hasanuddin University. This transition was formalized through the Rector’s Decree (then referred to as President) No. 619/UP-UH/60 dated April 13, 1960, based on which Drs. Miendrowo Prawirodjumeno was appointed as the first Director of the Library. The library was officially named the Central Library, a designation that remained in use until the issuance of the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0154/G/1983, which reclassified it as the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of the Hasanuddin University Library.
